Council hopes competition will reduce dialysis cost - price of sugar

The Consumer Council of Fiji is hopeful that competition will reduce cost of dialysis in Fiji.

Patients needing dialysis treatment in the Western Division will soon have a cheaper option as a new centre is set to open in Lautoka City by the end of this month.

The Island Kidney Assistance Foundation Fiji (Ltd) plans to charge patients $150 per session.

This will be the fourth dialysis centre in Fiji.

Council Chief Executive Premila Kumar says they have received number of complaints in relation to cost of dialysis treatment in Fiji.

Kumar says at the request of kidney patients, the Council’s suggestion is to increase the price of sugar and salt by 5 cents per kilogram to generate revenue that can go towards subsidizing the cost of dialysis.
